🔦 Hoq Cave – The Crown Jewel

Located in the northeastern cliffs above the village of Terbak, Hoq Cave is the largest and most accessible cave in Socotra. It stretches over 3 kilometers into the mountain, featuring:

  • Impressive stalactites and stalagmites
  • Ancient inscriptions in Brahmi, Greek, and Aramaic
  • Cool, humid air and total darkness beyond the entrance

A guided tour takes around 2 hours. Be sure to bring headlamps, water, and hiking shoes.

While Hoq is the most famous, Socotra has other fascinating caves to explore:

  • Degub Cave: Located in the south near Qalansiya, offering panoramic views and wildlife sightings.
  • Delisha Cave: A small but beautiful cave near Delisha beach.
  • Jahal Cave: Inaccessible by vehicle, but an adventurous hiking destination for the bold.

  • Always go with a local guide familiar with the terrain.
  • Use sturdy shoes and reliable lighting (headlamp + backup).
  • Beware of sharp rocks, slippery surfaces, and bats.
  • Respect inscriptions and avoid touching formations.
  • Never go alone – cell signals don’t work in caves.
